CHORAL VESPERS | ETON COLLEGE CHAPEL – 19 JUL

During the week, the students will also have the opportunity to sing the ancient office of Vespers in Eton’s beautiful College Chapel, directed by Ben Parry. The wonderful summer evening atmosphere in Chapel promises to be a very special experience or all.

MUSIC

During the week the full choir sings a wide range of music spanning the last five centuries up to the present day for the main course performances.

VENUE

The courses have been based at Eton College since 1985 and we start the summer with two courses here, rehearsing every day in the stunning buildings of the College and making full use of the state-of-the-art music schools.

Students will stay in individual rooms in one of the school’s boarding houses and enjoy three meals per day in the mediaeval College Hall.

Eton is across the river Thames from Windsor, near Slough and within easy reach of London, just outside the M25.

TUTORS

BEN PARRY: COURSE DIRECTOR

Ben Parry is a composer, conductor, arranger, singer and producer in both classical and light music. His choral compositions and arrangements are published by Peters Edition and have been heard at the BBC Proms and on the hit TV series, Glee. He is Director of the National Youth Choirs of Great Britain, Assistant Director of Music at King’s College, Cambridge and co-director of London Voices, with whom he has worked on the soundtracks of many major Hollywood films. Formally Director of Music at St Paul’s School, London and the Junior Department of the Royal Academy of Music, Ben has directed Eton Choral Courses annually for the last 20 years.

CARYS LANE: SINGING TEACHER

On the concert platform, Carys Lane has performed for such conductors as Sir Roger Norrington, Iván Fischer, Roger Norrington. Carys combines this with regular opera work. Carys has recorded Mozart’s Requiem for Warner Classics, Purcell and Antonio Vivaldi for Naxos, and Ralph Vaughan Williams for Chandos. She recorded the role of First Witch in Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas for the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment for Chandos and has made over 90 discs with ensembles such as The Tallis Scholars, The Gabrieli Consort, The Sixteen, Oxford Camerata, The Clerks and The Cardinall’s Musick who won Gramophone’s disc of the year in 2010. Carys is a vocal coach for the Choir of Merton College, Oxford, and is a long standing member of the Choral Course teaching staff!

DAN LUDFORD-THOMAS: SINGING TEACHER

Dan is an established singing teacher and choral conductor based in London. He combines a busy schedule conducting professional choirs, choral societies and chambers choirs with his role as Head of Singing at Dulwich College and singing teaching post at Eton College. Dan has extensive experience in the development of young voices, regularly preparing young singers for solo roles at major Opera Houses, applications for choral awards at University and places at music conservatoires. He is the conductor of the Senior Choir of the National Children’s Choir of Great Britain and enjoys a long association as a singing teacher on the Eton Choral Courses.

PETER WILSON: SINGING TEACHER

Peter Alexander Wilson is an RNCM Principal Study Tutor within the School of Vocal Studies and Opera, a position he has held since 2001. From 1991 to 2008 Peter was also a Senior Vocal Tutor at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music, and has taught in Italy at the Malatesta Scuola di Canto. He now directs the Arran Summer School in Scotland.

Peter studied at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and the RNCM where his study was supported by a Ralph Vaughan Williams Musical Trust scholarship. His professional début was with Glyndebourne Touring Opera and was followed by a principal contract at the Grande Theatre de Nancy. He has also enjoyed a busy career on the recital and oratorio platform throughout Britain and Europe.

Peter’s students have won the Monserrat Caballe and Richard Tauber international singing competitions and have been awarded scholarships from major UK funding bodies. His students have appeared as principals in international opera houses including Covent Garden, English National Opera and La Scala Milan.
